Why is hypnosis more effective than 'will power' to help you stop the smoking habit?

Smoking is a habit, like compulsive gambling or shopping. Habits are not conscious choices, they are patterns laid down in the unconscious mind. Since hypnosis allows us to access the unconscious directly, habits and compulsions can be tackled directly and effortlessly.
You don't struggle to avoid chewing your shoes, do you? Why? Because it never occurs to you to do such a ridiculous and disgusting thing. After the smoking habit is broken by hypnosis, you would no more want a cigarette than you would want to chew your shoes.
If the unconscious patterns have been changed, then there is no struggle between your will (conscious) and your urges (unconscious).
Why is hypnosis more effective(1) than nicotine replacement or other drug therapies?
Nicotine is an addicting drug and so the nicotine in cigarettes helps to reinforce the habit. However, nicotine is not the main thing causing you to smoke. Very similar urges and uncontrolled behaviours occur in addictions where there is no chemical involved, like compulsive gambling. Addictions can occur due to purely psychological factors.
If cigarette addiction was mainly a nicotine addition, then nicotine replacement (patches or gum) would be really successful. In fact, most people who use nicotine products fail to quit long term.
The links which your unconscious mind has created to smoking are much more important than nicotine. Links like "Fun with friend and smoking" or "Break from work and smoking".

Did you know that Wayne McLaren, who played the 'Marlboro Man' died at 51 from lung cancer?). Peer pressure helped - when you wanted to fit in with the cool kids, be 'grown up' and rebel against your parents.
All these unconscious patterns are still there, perhaps decades after they were first formed.

If you quit smoking using 'will power' - attempting to overcome your unconscious patterns using your conscious mind - you may succeed. But the unconscious drives will still be there. For example, seeking comfort by placing something in your mouth, may lead to you replacing one comfort habit (smoking) with another (overeating).
Quitting with hypnosis allows the unconscious processes to be altered directly, so there is no conflict, no struggle. Nothing to fear.

Stopping smoking seems like a negative step - stopping doing something. However, it is in fact a positive choice, which can be the first step in making other positive changes in your life.
Firstly, you need to make a commitment. You need to decide that you are going to become a non-smoker. Once you have done that, and carried it through, you will look back on your achievement, and ask yourself "If I could do that, what else can I achieve in my life?"
By becoming a non-smoker (not an ex-smoker, who struggles against continuing urges), you regain power over one area of your life, which was out of your control. And if you can control one area of your life, why not another, and another?
